artist statement

The theme that we chose for our photos was power. We went with powerful things that happen in nature everyday. The lightning pictures were used to envoke the idea that powerful things happen around us in everyday life. Catching a picture with a bolt of lightning striking is a very difficult thing to capture. It took countless takes to be able to capture the right picture. The picture of the fireworks was meant to show the power of explosives. No matter how beautiful something looks it can be a powerful event  that could kill someone if not correctly handled or even have the potential to cause major fires. The picture of the dam was shown as a powerful entity that doesnt look like much but in reality it is holding back millions of tons of water as well as "powering" many peoples homes. We wanted our photos to show how very powerful things happen and occur around us at any given time. We could have taken the easy way out with power photos and have had them staged or set up. It would be very easy to show power with people in everyday life whether it would be weight lifting or just power made my humans in general. We chose the tougher path to make the photos as sporatic as possible. All these photos show the interaction between nature and their interaction with us at any given time. Another theme we used in the photos was the ability to harness power such as  the dam. We also used unharnessable power such as the lightning in the pictures. I believe that we did a good job showing powerful things that occur around us at all times at any given day.
